In 1994, QIT opened a tailings site known as P-84 in Sorel-Tracy to receive tailings from the water treatment plant. QIT has ensured strict environmental monitoring of the site from the moment it began operating and maintains honest, open lines of communication with the Sorel-Tracy citizens’ committee. Formed following a broad-based information and public consultation process, the committee sees that QIT fulfills its environmental commitments regarding the management of the site.

In January 2001, QIT signed a draft agreement with the City of Sorel-Tracy for the creation of an outdoor activity centre, part of which would be set up on the P-84 site. A partner in the project, QIT also agreed to make a financial contribution of more than $1 million and committed to transfer a portion of the tailings site land to the city after the inauguration of the second phase of the project. With the consent of the citizens' committee and the municipality’s urban development and environmental advisory committees, municipal authorities therefore authorized the expansion of the tailings site. This new agreement attests to the spirit of openness and cooperation that has been established over the years between QIT and its neighbours.
