QIT-Fer et Titane has long been actively committed to protecting
the environment and the quality of life in neighbouring communities.
Concern for the environment began back in the 1970s, when QIT
implemented an extensive air purification program. During the 1980s,
dust collecting systems were upgraded so that these residues could
be reused during the process or could be recycled. In the 90s, it
focused on reducing waste in water at the source and on building a
wastewater treatment plant. In fact, QIT was awarded the "Mérite
environnemental 1995" prize from Quebec’s ministry of the
environment for its wastewater treatment program and for its role in
protecting the St. Lawrence River. Over the course of these three
decades, more than $215 million were invested in environmental
protection. Since 2000, QIT has continued with its commitment to
protect the environment and nearly $30 million has been invested in
different improvement projects, including more than $4 million for reducing
community noise levels.
