In October 1968, Quebec Metal Powders inaugurated a new plant.
Located on the grounds of the QIT metallurgical complex, the new
plant received molten iron directly from the reduction furnaces to
convert into iron powders for use by metal part manufacturers. It
was the largest plant of its kind, and the first to use liquid iron.
The process was considered ultra-modern, and the plant’s
anti-pollution equipment was not only impressive, but it also put
the company ahead of its time in terms of environmental protection.
"The Iron and Titanium Corporation is an almost perfect example
of a company that is fully integrated into the Quebec economy, from
mining natural riches to marketing its finished products," said
Quebec premier Daniel Johnson, speaking to journalists and guests
gathered on January 8, 1968, when construction of the Quebec Metal
Powders plant was announced.
