In 1985, QIT undertook an ambitious program that lasted more
than 10 years to modernize its furnaces. The power of the reduction
furnaces was increased, while their energy consumption was
decreased. The loading system was improved and the control room
upgraded. Modernization and plant expansion were implemented
simultaneously, thereby boosting production capacity by almost 30%.
In total, more than $240 million were spent on upgrading and
expanding the reduction plant.
