The demand for ore was increasing and QIT had to be in a position to meet it. In 1998, the company therefore decided to move forward with mine expansion. On the east side of the solid ilmenite deposit, there are reserves totalling 30 million metric tonnes of ore – which is enough to feed production for years to come. Work is already underway and if everything proceeds as planned, the first tonnes of ore will be extracted in 2008. And the QIT story continues…
