As a result of the partnership established between QIT and the
municipality of Sorel-Tracy, a recreational park was opened to the
public in 2002. The partnership was initiated at a time when the
company wanted to enlarge its mining residue site on the southwest
edge of the municipality of Sorel-Tracy. QIT contributed to the
purchase and landscaping of 82 hectares of land adjacent to the
site, and to the construction of a Chalet that serves the park’s
users. This win/win partnership has allowed the citizens of the area
to benefit from a year-round recreational park that has 8 kilometres
of walking and cross-country skiing trails. As soon as one portion
of the adjacent residue site has reached capacity, it will be
returned to the community for inclusion in the park and the citizens
will then decide upon its use and consequent landscaping. From the
company’s point of view, we are still able to benefit from an
economical solution for the disposal of our mining residues that
will one day be transformed into a plus for the entire community.
The climate of confidence that has been built-up over the years was
an important factor in the successful outcome of this partnership.
