On the 3rd of August 2005, Rio Tinto management confirmed that the Project to exploit ilmenite mineral sands in Madagascar would go ahead. At a cost of 775M$ US, this project will require a 585M$ US investment for mining infrastructure in Madagascar and a 190M$ US (235M$ CAN) investment at the metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracy. Two of the nine reduction furnaces in Sorel-Tracy will be entirely dedicated to the ore from Madagascar which will produce a slag containing 90% TiO2. The ore will be delivered to us from the mine at 60% TiO2. The remaining seven furnaces will continue to treat the ore from our mine at Havre-Saint-Pierre.

The Madagascar Project is scheduled to produce its first tonnes during the last quarter of 2008 and will reach an annual production capacity of 750,000 tonnes by 2012. At that point, QIT will be in a position to annually produce 475,000 tonnes of this new slag.
