Even back in 1953, automation was fundamental at QIT.
The volume and rate of furnace loading were rigorously
calculated. By 1955, the system was controlled by means of
a complex and unique system called IKC, which adjusted
loading to the energy load. In 1967, this system was
replaced by a process computer – high-precision technology
considered cutting edge at the time. Computer-assisted
loading improved not only furnace performance, but working
conditions as well.
Automated production and computerized process control were
gradually incorporated throughout the metallurgical complex.
The UGS plant, the newest QIT facility, is entirely
automated, thanks to the hard work of QIT engineers and
industrial computing experts.
